During this time, numerous challenges were presented while providing adequate medical care to injured soldiers, highlighting the need for advancements in military medicine. Both eras had causes, outcomes, and long-term effects that the soldiers endured. During the Mexican War, medical treatment for soldiers was significantly worse than modern medicine. The challenges faced during The Mexican War and the American Civil War highlighted similarities, differences, and the impact of disease. The treatment of injured soldiers was low in quality due to a lack of trained physicians and medical staff. Medical supplies, including bandages, medications, and surgical instruments, were frequently in limited supply, affecting the treatment standard given to wounded soldiers. The inability to effectively organize medical care and evacuate injured soldiers resulted from a worse communication framework. Like The Mexican War, during The Civil War, which lasted from 1861-1865, musket balls and artillery caused severe injuries (Corbett et al., 2014). Some differences during The Civil War were that more soldiers and conflicts were fought during the Civil War, which made medical issues worse. Reports that surgery was frequently performed without anesthetic and that needless amputations often led to harsh criticism of the medical treatment (Behling et al., 2017). Medical staff from both the Confederate and American sides treated injured soldiers during the Mexican War according to a "triage of allegiance” (Price, D., 2020b). Republicanism rose to prominence, and the Second Party System collapsed in part because of the slavery problem. Similar to the American Civil War, which was fought over states' rights, secession, and slavery between the Union and the Confederacy. Following the creation of an ambulance corps in 1864, the treatment provided to injured troops was improved. Medical techniques must constantly progress to meet the healthcare demands of military forces during the war, as seen by the disparate medical landscapes during the Mexican and Civil Wars (Behling et al., 2017).
