Document Overview
Introduction Nursing informatics uses information and data and transforms the knowledge to improve health, equity, safety, quality, and outcomes of the patients they serve (ANA 2022). Nurses who specialize in nursing informatics design, develop, implement, and evaluate informatic solutions and technologies within their area of practice, which can include clinical, administrative, educational, and research (ANA 2022). Collaboration between informatic nurse specialists and stakeholders in different care settings helps to ensure best practices and solutions to current informatic issues are being upheld. Informatic nurse specialists most commonly practice in health care environments but may also work in non-health environments such as insurance, government and regulatory agencies, and technology vendors to help provide scientific, project management, and informatics principles (ANA 2022). I have interviewed a nurse informatics specialist who works in a large academic organization serving multiple hospitals. They have a masterβs degree in nursing informatics and are board certified with through the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The interview was conducted over email due to time constraints of the participant. Informatics became a field of interest for them due to always having an interest in the IT and technology side of things. They came originally from the clinical side of nursing and were having a hard time with burnout, so they made a switch. They have received two other certifications from the American Nurses Credentialing Center as well. They have been an Informatics nurse specialists integrate and optimize clinical information systems to help the betterment of the quality and safety of patient care through evidence-based practice and quality improvement initiatives (Kleib et. al., 2026). The ANA published the nursing informatics scope of practice initially in 2001, with their most recent edition in 2022 (Kleib et. al., 2026). They describe an informatics nurse specialist who has a formal graduate education in informatics who has achieved and maintained applicable certification (Kleib et. al., 2026). They participate in initiatives such as design, development, implementation, and evaluation of informatics technology through clinical, administrative, educational, and research settings, which also describes 17 standards and competencies that informatic nurses must have (Kleib et. al., 2026). The interviewee stated that they had help to implement new technologies and evaluated how the implementation and new education was going. In clinical informatics, informatics nurse specialists analyze data and information, utilize data from electronic health records, and utilize data management and sharing (ANA 2022). The interviewee stated they worked with administrators and leadership to analyze data for quality improvement and performance. By using collaboration between leadership and informatics nurse specialists, this can help establish shared goals to improve quality and accountability (Taylor Pearson et. al., 2026). By using the six-sigma theory, this method focuses on reducing errors and variability by defining, measuring, analyzing, improving and controlling (Kaminski, 2025).
