illness. Obesity can be a risk because low income or poverty communities may not be able to afford fresh and health foods. Substance abuse in lower income communities can be a result of low income or can also cause homelessness. In the article written by Mosel (2024), in 2015 more than half of adulting living in affordable housing had mental health and substance abuse disorders. Chronic stress can be caused from low income or poverty because these communities may not feel they are able to provide enough for their families, and they also may continuously worry about bills. Disease and illnesses can be a risk factor of poverty and low income because there living conditions may not be ideal for separation or quarantine when someone becomes ill. These communities are also at higher risk for developing illnesses due to not being able to afford proper healthcare. Poverty and low-income communities need healthcare’s help to increase wellness and health and decrease illnesses and diseases in their community. Intervention Proposal 1. Identify one national population health goal or objective related to the identified risk or disparity, such as Healthy People or another national initiative. In the article written by Healthy People 2030, one implementation they are recommending is a housing voucher program. This is for households with young children that have very low incomes. The voucher covers a substantial portion of rent so they can afford housing in neighborhoods with more opportunities for the children and have a safer environment. 2. Propose one strategy for the advanced practice nurse to collaborate at the local, state, or national level to advocate for the health of the vulnerable population and advance the identified Healthy People goal or objective. One strategy that would be on a national level that advance practice nurses can advocate for is reducing healthcare costs by allowing advance practice nurses to practice independently. This can be done by allowing advance practice nurses to do routine checkups which will improve care quality and decrease the use of emergency care centers. The cost of a physician and an advance practice nurses differ greatly, and by using advance practice nurses it will decrease the salary hospitals pay physicians. This will also make healthcare more affordable for individuals who have basic insurance plans or no insurance plans at all. This ties directly with housing vouchers because the more affordable healthcare is to a community, the better their finances are. According to Joyce 2021, research shows that advance practice nurses who practice without interference, have a direct correlation to healthcare costs decreasing when allowed by the government. 0320 RB/KK References Healthy People 2030.
