This brochure gives information for new parents that are expecting and after birth—providing the signs and symptoms that need addressing promptly to protect the parent and baby (The Joint Commission, 2021). They speak Up campaign gives resourceful information at a glance that is understanding for a new parent that having a baby is already a life- changing event and comes with a lot of excitement. However, it can be worrisome when experiencing different things with a body that can be life-threatening. The Joint Commission Speak Up for New Parents is helping patients and advocating for them to pay attention to their health and safety. Article Summary The main topics discussed within the brochure are signs and symptoms of hypertension and preeclampsia that can be present during and after pregnancy—providing the symptoms to watch for, such as “swelling, headaches, nausea, sudden weight gain, and vision change” (The Joint Commission, 2021). Hemorrhaging is also another topic discussed within the brochure, which is bleeding during pregnancy or after and making new parents aware if they have “increased heart rate, soaking a pad less than an hour, developing larger blood clots, or having shortness of breath” (The Joint Commission, 2021). Infection is another topic, which a new parent can be at risk for developing “chills, fever, fatigue, paleness, loss of appetite” (The Joint Commission, 2021). The last topic discussed within Speak Up for New Parents brochure is symptoms of feeling depressed, which is not unusual for a new parent. If the feeling of “helplessness and sadness, not getting out of bed, or having no contact with baby” (The Joint Commission, 2021). A new mother is at risk for any of these topics discussed, and the Speak Up brochure allows for more awareness to seek medical help. Communication The Speak Up for New Parents brochure is for communication with the patient and their healthcare provider. Being that a new mother can be unaware of the symptoms that she is feeling can be related to pregnancy. Still, it can also be confused with a more severe health concern providing this group of patients with the opportunity to speak up on how they feel, such as a new mother experiencing hypertension and preeclampsia. The brochure tips to “never miss a prenatal doctor visit, having the provider check for urine for protein and keep track of the blood pressure to be aware of changes” (The Joint Commission, 2021) brochure educates the new mother on early signs so that they can alert their provider to decide on the care process and provide a better outcome for the patient and provide safety for the mother and baby.
