Pa琀椀ents who lack insurance have more di昀케cul琀椀es in maintaining their health than those who do have insurance. In an ar琀椀cle by Pa琀椀l et al (2022), they state that uninsured adults have less access to recommended care, receive poorer quality of care, and experience worse health outcomes. This is a constant issue that comes up repeatedly and causes pa琀椀ents to put their health on the back burner to prevent themselves from going into debt. If this week's pa琀椀ent were uninsured, it would be appropriate to keep cost-e昀昀ec琀椀veness in mind for treatment. The physician should be open to discussing the cost of treatment op琀椀ons and how the pa琀椀ent can take care of these costs. Generic medica琀椀ons should be considered, and prescrip琀椀on programs should be o昀昀ered to help cut down the cost to the pa琀椀ent. As an NP, the physical and history exam should be thorough to rule in favor of the appropriate diagnosis without having to complete unnecessary diagnos琀椀c tests to rule out illness, to cut down the cost to the pa琀椀ent.
