Non-verbal communica琀椀on such as si琀��ng down during an interview is probably one of the best ways to send a message. Si琀��ng down face to face in a relaxed posi琀椀on can provide a sense of assurance of having your complete a琀琀en琀椀on. Upon further researching the topic of non-verbal communica琀椀on, I came to realize all the di昀昀erent things we can learn from just observing someone. For instance, nonverbal cues can reveal biological sex, gender, social and developmental a琀琀ributes. These types of observa琀椀ons can also lead to quick interpreta琀椀on which may be false and not what is being communicated (Hall et al., 2019). As a provider we should be mindful of how we interpret nonverbal communica琀椀on and the possible nonverbal ques we may be sending. For instance, yawning, standing, tapping feet, or looking at the clock may send signals of boredom or being in a rush. As you said, a talka琀椀ve pa琀椀ent can be di昀케cult and as a provider we must be mindful and maintain pa琀椀ence. It is very di昀케cult to keep these pa琀椀ents focused on their chief complaint. Ac琀椀ve listening and non verbal communica琀椀on is very important when it comes to dealing with these kinds of pa琀椀ents and their family members. I have ran into this problem a lot while working on the cardiac 昀氀oor in the hospital, not only with the pa琀椀ents but also with their families. Si琀��ng down with the pa琀椀ents and showing them that you are not rushing them some琀椀mes works, but also other forms of nonverbal communica琀椀on tends to help with these pa琀椀ents as well.
