Document Overview

2 Introduction Health Information Technology has helped revolutionize healthcare worldwide by providing interoperability through clinical data exchange, access to Electronic Health Records (EHR), e-prescribing, and telehealth, among other advancements. Research has shown that health technologies have the capacity to improve patient outcomes, healthcare processes, and patient safety (Borycki, 2023). Health Information Technology is crucial for enhancing healthcare delivery and allows for the rapid sharing of accurate patient information, supports evidence-based clinical reasoning, and helps facilitate continuous learning through data collection and analysis. By automating healthcare’s routine tasks, digital transformation in healthcare can significantly reduce human errors, control costs for healthcare providers, and streamline clinical operations for greater efficiency. This assignment will demonstrate how utilizing technology and information systems, such as barcode scanning, enables healthcare professionals to reduce medical errors and improve the efficiency of clinical workflows. In addition, this paper will also discuss the issue of Barcode Medication Administration in the clinical environment, its effects on healthcare delivery and safety, ethical and legal guidelines that are involved, proposes a solution, and will include a decision-making model that is suitable for the implementation of the proposed solution. Clinical Issue Healthcare Technology, such as Barcode Medication Administration, significantly benefits healthcare professionals by improving productivity, enhancing patient safety, and reducing medical errors. Medication administration errors (MAEs) occur in about 10%, ranging from approximately 5% to 20% of medication administrations in hospitals 4 concealing them. Healthcare professionals must be able to identify and report adverse events and problematic issues so they can be corrected (Mulac et al., 2021). By utilizing the Internal Quality Collaborative Model, a structured approach where multidisciplinary teams utilize quality improvement methods to improve the use of Barcode Medication Administration, medication errors, and compliance. Key components would include monitoring performance, setting clear standards and goals, providing regular feedback, addressing issues, and utilizing staff meetings after an adverse event. To improve compliance, implement a strategy that includes performance-based incentives, robust training, and maintaining consistent communication of the most current practices. Conclusion Health Information Technology has improved patient outcomes, efficiency, and safety through interoperability, data exchange, and supports better patient outcomes through tools such as e-prescribing, telehealth, and barcode scanning. Barcode medication administration (BCMA) can, if poorly implemented, cause disrupted workflow, increased workload and cause medication errors (Mulac et. al., 2021). Through error reporting, various agencies are able to analyze data, identify issues, and utilize strategies to improve safety and quality, preventing future mistakes and implementing corrective actions. Also, by utilizing the Internal Quality Collaborative Model and with nursing leaders building an environment where staff feel safe in reporting errors, this will help improve patient safety by enabling identification and prevention of future errors, fostering a culture of learning and open communication, and empowering nurses to implement corrective actions.
