Document Overview

Introduction One of the most serious complications of healthcare are healthcare associated infections (HCIs). These often-preventable infections pose a huge threat to the cost budgets within healthcare facilities. The hands of healthcare professionals act as vectors for the transmission of viruses, making hand hygiene one of the most effective strategies in reducing health care associated infections (Lotfinejad et al., 2021). Clean hands count, so keeping the skin of the hands clean requires healthcare professionals to be knowledgeable about how hands should properly be washed. According to the CDC, alcohol-based hand sanitizers are the preferred method of cleaning hands in healthcare facilities. Proper handwashing should last at least 15 seconds. The surface area of the hands washed and amount of friction used to remove germs is more important than the time spent washing. Appropriate hand hygiene by healthcare professionals is a simple act many nurses perform up to 100 times a day. The process of proper handwashing in healthcare involves regularly using soap and warm water or using alcohol-based sanitizer to remove germs and kill bacteria (Boyce, 2019). Proper hand washing etiquette protects those receiving care by reducing and preventing the spread of disease and illness causing germs. It is vital for the success of infection control, care quality, and the overall safety of staff and patients. Reduction in the number of healthcare associated infections can be reduced with proper handwashing education. Healthcare associated infections have the ability to raise the overall cost of healthcare and increase the duration of stay for patient. The cost of developing an MSN project is small. A cost-benefit analysis would be beneficial in comparing the benefits of current training methods against the cost of implementation. This would provide an organization with a final breakdown of costs in order to make a more informed decision as to cost effectiveness of implementation (Rundle et al., 2020). Adequate continued training on hand hygiene increases the quality of care delivered by protecting patients from infection. Conclusion The hands of healthcare professionals act as vectors for the transmission of viruses, making hand hygiene one of the most effective strategies in reducing health care associated infections. Nurse leaders should take the initiative to prevent the spread of infection by ensuring all team members are educated on proper techniques.
