MRI scans use magnetic fields and focused radio waves to detect hydrogen atoms in tissues within the body. They can detect the same problems as CT scans but they are better for identifying certain conditions, such as brain atrophy and damage from small strokes or subtle ischemia. Labs ordered B12 level and analysis of thyroid and thyroid-stimulating hormone levels. RPR (rapid plasma reagin), CBC, CMP with diff Blood counts, including kidney, liver, or blood glucose, drug and alcohol tests (toxicology screen), tests for certain infections known to cause dementia, such as HIV and syphilis, and other tests may be ordered as appropriate for a patient’s specific situation. Pt declined a lumbar puncture (spinal tap) which is then analyzed for evidence of Alzheimer’s disease proteins or of certain infections, inflammatory conditions, or other diseases that may cause dementia. -Reason for referral i.e., evaluate Dementia, certify for ability not to drive... I know that Dementia cannot thoroughly be diagnosed and requires a Detailed neuropsychological testing. This is time-consuming and requires special training, and it usually occurs during a separate appointment with a neuropsychologist.
