PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCIES Professional Competencies: National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Competencies Lori Bowden Walden University NRNP 6568-16: Synthesis in Advanced Nursing Practice of Patients in Family Care Settings Dr. Morgan February 2022 National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Competencies Since 1990, The Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) commenced nine broad core competencies that all nurse practitioners must abide by no matter what area or specialty the nurse practitioner practices in. In 2017, the competencies were updated to be compatible with current medicine. The nine competencies include scientific foundations, leadership, quality, practice inquiry, technology and information literacy, policy, health delivery system, ethics, and independent practice. Walden University’s Family Nurse Practitioner program has helped me prepare to transition from a student to practicing in the field to synthesize the knowledge that I have gained throughout the program to not only learn the competencies but to apply them as a practicing Advanced Practice Nurse. It is important as a nurse practitioner to be aware of the competencies to provide a safe and effective patient care environment and be a well-rounded healthcare provider. The NONPF competencies resource was accessed from the Walden University website and used to navigate and develop this assignment. Competency One: Scientific Foundations I have been integrating this competency every time I have conducted research from the start of the program in January 2020 and current. This competency highlights the importance of utilizing, analyzing, integrating, translating, and developing evidence- based data to continuously improve the practice of nurse practitioners in all community settings. Walden integrated advanced pharmacology and advanced pathophysiology courses into the program before starting the clinicals which has been very helpful to apply the knowledge from the courses to the patients seen during clinicals. Having had four clinicals, I have witnessed my own improvement with communication and patient education skills. I believe the improvements have been due to the theories, framework, and principles taught during this program. Competency Two: Leadership Leadership is a quality that every nurse practitioner should implement into their everyday practice routine. This competency focuses on the importance of leadership as a nurse practitioner to translate to patient care needs and goals. My leadership skills have been enhanced throughout the program. I believe this is because I have more confidence when providing patient care which has been increased since the four clinical rotations I have had. A nurse practitioner that has strong abilities to be a leader can transfer those qualities when collaborating with other healthcare professionals and advocating for the patient to implement the best interventions and outcomes. Lamb, Martin-Misener, Bryant-Lukosius, & Latimer (2018) states that the current state of health care is one of the continuous changes where leaders at all levels are needed to lead changes to create positive results. The nurse practitioner needs to be informed with both cost-effective and quality care that reflects critical thinking and the current evidence-based data. Participating in professional nursing organizations is also beneficial to remain current with the nursing practice and health outcomes of patient
