Document Overview

Safe Medication Administration According to Gwen Cox a relationship between nurse and patient is among the most honest, loving, & giving relationship therapeutically and professionally. It is developed with connection based on communication, trust, and respect, and the nurse comforts the patient with their physical, emotional, and psychological needs while also fostering independence. Trust, understanding, honesty, respect, and working together are all important parts (Patient Safety Movement, 2017). The situation that was impacted while in the medicine room was the right drug/medication, right dose and right indication. This happened because the Gwen wasn't paying attention or didn't check the drug correctly before getting it ready, which made it more likely that she choose the wrong dosage of medication (Institute for Safe Medication Practices, 2022). She made a mistake because of outside factors such as frequent distractions and interruptions in the medication room, as well as time pressure and a heavy workload. These things made it harder for Gwen to focus, made her more stressed, and made it more probable that she would choose or get the wrong medicine (Patient Safety Movement, 2017). The event presented there is a medication error was when Gwen gave the patient twice as much of the medicine that was ordered and did not recheck it before administration, which meant that the drug that she prepared didn't match what the doctor ordered. Gwen paused the process right away, double-checked the drug against the order, threw (waste) away the wrong one, and got the right one ready before giving it to the patient to make sure they were safe. Gwen Cox responded with serious concern and professionalism, focusing on patient safety rather than blame. She used the situation as a teaching moment, reinforcing the importance of following the medication rights, staying focused, and double-checking medications. She emphasized accountability, learning from As a future nurse, it is important to have a good relationship between a nurse and a patient. Having an open communication between the nurse and patient, having active listening and intently showing that you care. According to Androus, A. B. (2020, December 30), putting the patient's needs, safety, and health first is what advocacy is all about. Respect and empathy getting to know each patient as a person in general, it should be a therapeutic relationship where the patient feels safe, supported, and sure of the treatment they are obtaining. It also emphasizes the importance of the nurse-patient relationship, built on trust, compassion, and accountability. The fact that the patient showed understanding despite the error is a reminder that patients are human beings who rely on nurses not just for technical care, but for empathy and honesty (Androus, 2020). One mistake can make patients safer by emphasizing any weaknesses with the healthcare system, such as bad communication, complicating or inconsistent rules, or problems with how things are done.
