Document Overview
Which change model would you use to implement the identified change and why: Lewin’s Theory of Planned Change, Plan-Do-Study- Act (PDSA), or Kotter’s 8-Step Process for Leading Change? The Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) is the most appropriate to this scenario because it may help improve, identify, and support strategies on how to handle prescription medication refills. It can also be beneficial during the negotiation process to identify the needs of the staff and to encourage change (McNicholas et al., 2019). The change should be focused on the improvement of the organization. The “Plan” would include changing the non-medical staff duties and implementing EHR system restrictions to protect the patient. The “DO” is focused on implementing and testing the new policies and procedures regarding medication refills. The “Study” would show the results of the implementation of the new policies, and the “Act” would allow the administration to identify areas for improvement and create or modify policies and procedures to ensure the event does not happen again. The organizational change is minor, and it reinforces guidelines. With the new policy, the non-medical staff would not have the same level of responsibilities. This can bring down their stress level when trying to assist a patient with prescription medication refills. Identify and discuss one barrier to implementing the change process. One barrier could come from licensed medical staff feeling overworked by adding more work to an already overloaded workday. One factor that can facilitate the change could be hiring licensed medical staff that would be responsible for entering prescription medication into the EHR system after receiving orders from the primary care staff.
