NR 582NP Week 1 Discussion; Impact of a Leader.

Dr. Distler and classmates, As I reflect on the many managers that I have had over the last 6 years of my nursing career a few seem to stand out to me that have positively impacted my nursing career. My most recent manager has impacted me the most. She is new to her role as a nurse manager, and she has had some challenges that she has had to overcome. The positive impact she has had on me is one of the reasons that I have chosen to pursue my nurse practitioner degree. As a leader, she is an excellent communicator and is always making sure that we have the resources that we need to perform at the highest level and provide the best care for our patients. She is very supportive of our professional development and encourages her staff to be successful in our skills as nurses. As a charge nurse on the unit, she encourages us to be strong leaders and helps us to create a safe and positive environment that promotes teamwork among the staff. Her style of leadership is transformational and creates a positive work environment, she is always available to listen to our concerns and is very open to any suggestions that we may have when it comes to helping with change across the unit. Transformational leadership is described as a nurse leader who works to inspire nurses to achieve a greater vision by helping with strength development and this leadership works well with mentoring (Leadership in Nursing: Qualities & Why It Matters, 2024). Her leadership skills can be analyzed by using the American Association of Colleges of Nursing leadership competencies (AACN).
