2 Interdisciplinary Collaboration Problem Identification The mental strain placed upon healthcare workers on a daily basis is undeniably intense. Highly stressful situations or events such as a pandemic, exacerbate the stress healthcare workers endure and can lead to what is known as nursing burnout. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) ICD-11, nursing burnout is a condition conceptualized as the result of unmanaged workplace stress and fatigue, feeling unappreciated, misunderstood and emotionally drained. Nursing burnout consists of three parts, emotional exhaustion. Depersonalization and a reduction in personal accomplishments (Velando-Soriano et, al). The occurrence of nursing burnout is on the rise. In 2020, it was reported that approximately 2/3 of nurse’s experience a period of burn out and it is even more alarming that 69% of nurses under the age of 25 reported experiencing nursing burnout. If the up and coming nurses are becoming burnt out before the possibility of achieving the first career milestone, the profession is headed for trouble. Nurse burnout can happen in any facility, any department and to any nurse. The burn out is often the result of unmanage workplace stress and not a reflection of the level of compassion a nurse possesses. Understanding nursing burnout is important for preventing its consequences and minimizing any elevation of emotional or mental stress that a nurse may already endure (Baek et al., 2020). As healthcare members, it is important to be aware of the signs of nursing burnout and be able to identify these signs in not only themselves but each other. Importance of Interdisciplinary Collaboration Nursing burn out and the interrelations of teamwork go hand in hand. Teamwork plays a dynamic and critical part of the nursing profession. Developing trusting relationships with other 4 and death, nurses are likely to experience what is known as nursing burnout. Burnouts occur most in professions who have strong interactions with the people who benefit from their work. Being able to recognize the signs of burn out in ourselves and others around us is important for preventing medical mistakes, turnover rates and the personal consequences of burn out (Baek et al., 2020). Developing a supportive and welcoming work environment that fosters collaboration, has open communication and mentorship can alleviate any feelings of isolation and reduce the stress a nurse may feel. Preventing nurse burnout is important for preventing exhaustion that starts the vicious cycle of negative interactions which could affect team work on a cognitive and behavioral level. The use of effective teamwork is linked to improved patient outcomes, better management of health conditions and decreased healthcare associated infections (Lu et al., 2023). The American Nurses Association recommends getting plenty of rest, asking for help, eating a well-balanced diet, exercising and taking breaks to prevent the chances of nursing burnout. Burnout in the nursing profession is a serious issue but being able to identify the warning signs can allow for adjustments before a serious problem develops.
