Module 5: Delegation Part II Modern healthcare facilities such as hospitals, clinics and long-term care facilities tend to feature multi-tiered care teams. In these types of patient care settings, effective delegation is an important leadership skill that is imperative for all practicing nurses to develop. Delegation is an integral component in the provision of quality nursing care (Walker et al., 2021). While delegating tasks to support personnel such as certified nursing assistants (CNAs) eases the workload of the nurse and allows time for the completion of higher priority nursing interventions, there are still several factors to consider. The following paper will discuss some of these considerations, then apply them to the scenario of delegating obtaining a POC blood glucose result from a patient and conclude with a reflection on the delegation video recording in part 1 of this assignment. Nurses must remain cognizant of the fact that they are held accountable for their decision to delegate the task. Furthermore, although a task may have been delegated to the CNA, the nurse is still responsible for ensuring that the task was completed and for providing feedback to the delegate as appropriate (Vana et al., 2022). Moreover, when delegating tasks to CNAs, nurses must be sure to adhere to the five rights of delegation set forth by the NCSBN. The five rights of delegation are as follows: the right task, the right circumstance, the right person, the right direction and communication and the right supervision and evaluation (Vana et al., 2022). When considering if the nurse is delegating the right task, they must ensure that they are delegating a task that falls within the CNAs scope. This would automatically eliminate any task that requires nursing judgment, clinical reasoning or critical decision-making to complete other resources available for evaluation include that POC glucose results populate in the patient’s EMR and MAR in Epic along with the time that the result was obtained. As I reflect upon my video submission for the delegation assignment, I feel that it could have been improved. While I do believe that I maintained a clear and professional tone, I started out speaking slowly because I wanted to be sure to speak for at least three minutes and at the end my tone seemed rushed because I was afraid to exceed the five-minute time limit. Honestly, as a practicing nurse, delegation is something that I feel comes somewhat naturally to me, but going through all of these steps with an experienced CNA does seem somewhat unnatural and unrealistic to me. In a real-world scenario, I doubt that I would question a CNA that I have seen obtain a patient’s POC glucose numerous times about if they knew the proper technique to do so. I do feel that this was a valuable exercise though because it served as a bit of a refresher course about the five rights of delegation and all of the appropriate considerations to keep in mind when delegating tasks to CNAs. In conclusion, this delegation experience
