Leadership Self-Assessment This paper will discuss my role and skills as a master's prepared nurse in leadership and leading others. As master's prepared nurses, the American Organization of Nurse Leadership (AONL) provides frameworks and skills necessary to prepare great leaders in healthcare. Whitehead, D. K., Dittman, P., & McNulty, D. (2017) describe leadership's definition as a process in which a human being can influence a set of human beings to achieve a common purpose as a nurse leader. One must develop skills to lead, inspire, guide, or persuade another through developing skills known as competencies. Through this self-assessment, I will highlight the leadership skills and competencies I have obtained throughout my nursing career and through leading others as an advanced practice nurse. I will discuss my strengths and weaknesses as a transformational leader through the strategies and competencies constantly being developed as I grow in my role and experience in leadership. Personal Leadership Experience During my career, I have held formal and informal leadership roles in my twenty-plus years of nursing. My leadership roles included being an informal leader as a preceptor, a formal leader as a charge nurse, and an assistant nurse manager at ANM. As a preceptor, I oriented new nurses and students to bedside nursing, sharing my level of education and patient care and implementing patient safety and quality care. I also encouraged questions of all kinds, as any question that one has in their mind that is answered would be a stupid question as they will never know the answer to what they are pondering. The most straightforward question may be the one that will save a patient's life or a nurse's license. As charge nurse and ANM, I provide support, direction, corrective dialogue, and actions and encourage open communication and team partnerships. Efficient leadership of power abilities essential for constructing relationships are motivation, inspiration, partnership, and encouragement, leading groups to achieve organizational goals and enhancing decision-making power. The AONL specifies the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) necessary for nurse leaders' advancement and management of power. AONL details, “Nurse Executive Competencies as communication and relationship management, professionalism, knowledge of the healthcare environment, business skills and principles, and leadership” (AONL, 2023, para 2). Professionalism and knowledge of healthcare environments are the two competency areas I believe to be personal strengths, and communication and relationship management are two areas for growth opportunities. (Hughes et al., 2022, p. 441) AONL emphasizes professionalism skills such as accountability and advocacy and supports, promotes, and sets role model standards. Strength Competency One As an ANM, I use leadership competencies daily. First, I am present with staff and work at their side. I assist in whatever capacity is needed by being a role model and using teamwork to make workflow go smoothly. Strength Competency Two In my role, I help ensure the team has the necessary tools for delivering safe, evidence-based, quality patient care by using the organizations and governing bodies that govern our area of healthcare. I explain the purpose of our
