My prac琀椀cum se琀��ng is an internal medicine o昀케ce, where we predominantly serve a diverse adult popula琀椀on, primarily 50 years and above. Using the U.S. Preven琀椀ve Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommenda琀椀ons, two vital preventa琀椀ve screenings for this popula琀椀on include colorectal cancer screening and hypertension screening. Colorectal cancer screening is recommended for adults aged 45-75. Screenings can be performed via stool-based tests (e.g., FIT-DNA) or direct visualiza琀椀on (e.g., colonoscopy) to detect precancerous polyps early (USPSTF, 2021). Hypertension screening is recommended for all adults 18 and older. Annual or more frequent blood pressure measurements are crucial for iden琀椀fying hypertension early and preven琀椀ng adverse cardiovascular events (USPSTF, 2021). The providers in the o昀케ce primarily rely on evidence-based recommenda琀椀ons from the USPSTF to determine which screenings to o昀昀er based on age, sex, and familial risk factors. The quality of care observed is highly e昀昀ec琀椀ve. The clinic u琀椀lizes the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system to 昀氀ag pa琀椀ents who are overdue for preventa琀椀ve services, ensuring screenings are systema琀椀cally integrated into rou琀椀ne annual physicals. While all pa琀椀ents are theore琀椀cally screened based on clinical criteria, dispari琀椀es persist. I have observed that underinsured pa琀椀ents face barriers to follow-up, such as scheduling specialized diagnos琀椀c tes琀椀ng or paying for non-covered screening tools, leading to gaps in preventa琀椀ve care. Screenings are presented collabora琀椀vely as shared decision-making conversa琀椀ons. To address health literacy and the Na琀椀onal Standards for Culturally and Linguis琀椀cally Appropriate Services (CLAS) in Health and Health Care, providers use "teach-back" methods and provide easy-to-read educa琀椀onal materials to clearly understand the screenings o昀昀ered.
