Patients with dissociative and somatic symptom disorders are sometimes seen as difficult or not taken seriously because their symptoms are not always visible or medically explained (Lay et al., 2025). Another common bias is the belief that patients are attention- seeking.This is especially seen in somatic symptom disorders, where providers may assume symptoms are exaggerated or intentional. When providers have these biases, it can negatively impact the therapeutic relationship and delay proper diagnosis and treatment. Being aware of these biases and using a trauma-informed approach is essential for providing effective care. There are also several challenges when it comes to treating dissociative and somatic symptom disorders. One challenge is that many patients have limited insight into the psychological causes of their symptoms. For example, individuals with somatic symptom disorder may strongly believe their symptoms are purely medical, which can make them resistant to mental health treatment.
