Reflection on Learning This course meaningfully helped me meet Program Outcome 5: Advocates for positive health outcomes through compassionate, evidence-based, collaborative advanced nursing practice. In Week 1, I examined the legal and ethical complexities of involuntary psychiatric treatment. I learned how critical it is to advocate for the least restrictive measures while ensuring the safety of vulnerable patients. This challenged me to balance individual rights with societal needs and solidified my commitment to advocacy rooted in evidence and compassion. In Week 5, when creating the Mental Health Advocacy Infographic, I researched the impact of systemic inequities on marginalized mental health populations, specifically homeless individuals. Designing a clear call to action for legislative support taught me how to combine evidence-based recommendations with public health advocacy strategies, further reinforcing my ability to advocate beyond the individual level to broader systemic change. Additionally, working in my medication management practicum this session allowed me to apply these advocacy skills in real time. Through medication adjustments and patient education, I learned firsthand how important compassionate, evidence-based interventions are for promoting positive mental health outcomes. In Week 6, managing Dissociative and Somatic Symptom Disorders reinforced the ethical principle of nonmaleficence. I reflected on the risk of misdiagnosis or stigmatization when symptoms are medically unexplained and committed to practicing with humility, validation, and ethical integrity, especially when patients present with complex trauma histories.
