Document Overview
2 Please address the following questions in complete sentences. 1. What is the main function of lysosomes in a cell? Lysosomes are involved in the digestion and recycling of waste materials, damaged cell parts and toxic compounds in the cell. 2. What is the role of the Hexosaminidase A enzyme, and why is it important? Hexosaminidase A, enzyme assists in breaking down a fatty substance called GM2 ganglioside in the nerve cells. This is essential because, in the absence of it, harmful substances accumulate in the brain and nervous system, leading to diseases like Tay-Sachs. 3. What makes up the cell’s plasma membrane, and why is it important for cell function? The plasma membrane is a bilayer of phospholipids with proteins embedded in it. It is important because it controls what goes in and out of the cell and helps to maintain a stable internal environment. 4. What are examples of membrane-bound organelles and non- membrane-bound organelles in a eukaryotic cell? Some of the membrane-bound organelles found in a eukaryotic cell are the nucleus, mitochondria, lysosomes, Golgi apparatus, endoplasmic reticulum, etc. Some of the non-membrane-bound organelles are ribosomes, centrioles, cytoskeleton, etc. In addition, here are more examples of membrane-bound organelles such as vacuoles, chloroplasts (found in plant cells) and peroxisomes, whereas other non-membrane- bound organelles are nucleoli and microtubules. 5. A nurse is caring for a 6-month-old infant who has been diagnosed with Tay-Sachs disease. The parents express concern about the child's developmental milestones. Which of the following statements by the nurse is most appropriate? a. "Your child's development may be delayed, but interventions can help improve outcomes." My choice would be A. Because Tay-Sachs disease attacks the neurological system and often causes developmental delays and loss of motor skills as the disease advances. Early supportive measures can aid in improving comfort and quality of life.
