Illinois Scope of Practice Intended State of Practice After completing the nurse practitioner program, students may practice in different states. As for students practicing in Illinois, they have certain regulations the state decided for nurse practitioners to follow within their scope of practice. There are about eight specialties a nurse practitioner could practice in; this student will be focusing on Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. The Nurse Practitioner License has access to the scope of practice and requirements for the state of Illinois. Educational and Certification Requirements Starting the nurse practitioner program, students must have a registered nurse license. The state of Illinois's expectation is that students receive a baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited college/university before passing the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses. Once licensed as a registered nurse, students may start the nurse practitioner program in an accredited college/university. The Illinois Nurse Practitioner site provides a list of state board-approved schools for the program. “The education should include advanced counseling, patient education, health education, patient advocacy, advanced pharmacology, advanced patient assessment and diagnosis, and other advanced concepts, such as diagnosis and clinical management, relevant to a nurse practitioner’s role” (“Nurse Practitioner License,” 2024). Completing the program, an exam is required for certification in the desired specialty completed during school. Similar to the registered nurse license, nurse practitioners must maintain a valid national certification to practice. Practice Environment The state of Illinois identifies as a reduced state practice, requiring that nurse practitioners to collaborate with a physician for supervision for certain scopes of their practice.
