Rural areas in the United States have long faced a shortage of primary care providers, which puts rural residents at a higher risk of health problems and complications. Nurses constitute the largest group within the healthcare profession and work in various settings, catering to diverse populations. The nursing profession plays a crucial role in delivering high-quality, patient- centered, accessible, and affordable care. However, there are several states that impose restrictions on Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners (ARNPs), hindering their ability to practice at their full potential. By relaxing the scope of practice limitations, ARNPs can effectively address the pressing need for primary care services in both rural and urban areas. Nevertheless, regulations pertaining to ARNPs' scope of practice and professional autonomy differ from state to state. Research studies have shown that less restrictive regulations can enhance access to and utilization of primary care. In fact, a study conducted in states with full-practice authority for ARNPs revealed that 62% of individuals had improved geographic accessibility to primary care clinicians, including ARNPs, compared to only 35% in states with restricted practice authority (Oritz, 2018).
