Document Overview

Introduction • This presenta琀椀on will underscore the crucial role of advanced prac琀椀ce nurses in resolving ethical dilemmas. It will delve into the moral principles and resolu琀椀ons that guide these professionals in naviga琀椀ng complex ethical situa琀椀ons. Clinical Expertise and Decision-Making • APNs possess comprehensive training, which encompasses the development of advanced cri琀椀cal thinking skills, clinical reasoning and judgment, decision-making, and re昀氀ec琀椀ve prac琀椀ce (Giu昀昀rida et al., 2023). The extensive educa琀椀on for master’s prepared nurses brings a high level of clinical knowledge and skills to the table. This enables them to assess complex situa琀椀ons thoroughly and make informed decisions, ins琀椀lling con昀椀dence in their abili琀椀es. Ethical Decision-Making Frameworks • Advanced prac琀椀ce nurses are trained to use ethical decision-making frameworks, such as the ANA Code of Ethics or four topics approach, to analyze ethical dilemmas and develop ethically sound solu琀椀ons. These frameworks provide a structured approach to iden琀椀fying relevant ethical principles, considering all stakeholders' interests, and making morally jus琀椀昀椀ed decisions (Jonson et al., 2022). Key Stakeholders and the Impact: • Nurse A • Nurse A is faced with the moral decision to report the incident. Should she priori琀椀ze friendship over her professional duty? Repor琀椀ng Nurse B could jeopardize her friendship, and she risks being the reason why Nurse B loses her job and license. Looking the other way could impact pa琀椀ent safety, leading to medica琀椀on errors, inadequate pain relief, and a breach of trust between pa琀椀ents and healthcare providers. • Nurse B • Nurse B faces the responsibility for the misuse of drugs. Nurse B risks consequences, including losing her license and job and facing legal penal琀椀es. This incident may have a las琀椀ng impact on her career and personal life. Ethical analysis • Nurse B violated mul琀椀ple ethical principles and the ANA Code of Ethics in this situa琀椀on. While diver琀椀ng drugs and working impaired, she violated nonmale昀椀cence. Nonmale昀椀cence states that a pa琀椀ent has a right to no harm (Varkey, 2021). While under the in昀氀uence, the pa琀椀ent is at a high risk of harm and might su昀昀er from inadequate pain relief. Nurse A also has the poten琀椀al to violate nonmale昀椀cence if she does not report Nurse B. She would knowingly be pu琀ng pa琀椀ents at risk of harm. • The impaired nurse also disregarded the pa琀椀ent's right to bene昀椀cence. Bene昀椀cence states that healthcare workers have a duty to refrain from maltreatment, minimize harm, and promote wellness (Varkey, 2021). The nurse knowingly disregarded the principle of bene昀椀cence and par琀椀cipated in maltreatment of the pa琀椀ent. • The ANA developed the Code of Ethics for nurses as a comprehensive guide for nursing responsibili琀椀es. It ensures that nursing care is of the highest quality and aligns with the profession's ethical obliga琀椀ons ANA Code of (Fowler, 2015). Several provisions from the code of Ethics ethics signi昀椀cantly impact how nurses should ethically administer medica琀椀on. A detailed summary of provision 3 from the Code of Ethics and its implica琀椀ons for medica琀椀on administra琀椀on is outlined below: Provision 2 and Provision 5 • Provision 2 states that the nurse's primary commitment is to the pa琀椀ent.
