Answer: Psychotherapy is more interesting because it wasn’t a role I expected the PMHNP to fill. I was under the impression that you had to have some psychology degree to provide therapy. Pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy complement each other well. It reminds me of the scenario of what came first: the chicken or the egg. It doesn’t necessarily matter, but both are needed. The Pennsylvania Nurse Practice Act restricts the PMHNP’s ability to prescribe. NPs must have a collaborative agreement with a physician. What stood out from the content this week was focusing on the different degrees and education paths someone can take to become a psychiatric-mental APRN. I have always viewed the psychiatric mental health nurse clinical specialist role as very different from the PMHNP. Prescribing medication significantly sets these two advanced practice titles apart, but the literature refers to it almost as a minor task. As a side note, it’s becoming second nature for me to look up current practice guidelines and recommendations, which is good!
