NURS 6003 Module 1 Discussion; Professional Journey & Future Goals

Hi Class, I am originally from South Sudan (Africa). I came to the United States in 2001 as a refugee due to the ongoing civil war. As a refugee, I received excellent health care from a community health center run by nurses who provided health care services like health screenings and vaccinations. My nursing career started after graduating with an associate degree in nursing in 2009 at a community college in Virginia. After working as a registered nurse at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System (VCUHS) for 6 years, I earned my Bachelor of Sciences in nursing from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2016. I have worked with diverse patient populations, including postpartum, cardiac, orthopedic, neurosurgery, and transplant (liver and kidney), among others. I am excited to earn my Master of Sciences in acute care adult-gerontology nurse practitioner with you. Walden mission, vision, and goals in relationship to my professional and academic goals Walden University’s vision, mission, goals, and social change initiatives are related to my professional and academic goals and becoming a scholar-practitioner. My professional and academic goals are to get certified as an acute care adult gerontology nurse practitioner after completing my Master of Science degree program in acute care adult-gerontology nurse practitioner. This can only be realized by joining Walden University because Walden provides the opportunity to transform me into a scholar-practitioner so that I can effect positive social change. As a future nurse practitioner, I visualize myself being an “immediate solution of critical societal challenges, thereby advancing the greater global good” by providing holistic, patient- centered care that empowers individuals and communities to achieve optimal health and well- being (Walden n.d.). I believe that I can become a “scholarly, reflective practitioner and agent of positive social change” through Walden University because it encourages investigation, innovation, and analytical reasoning that results in “professional excellence.” As a future scholar-practitioner, I aim to integrate evidence-based practice with compassionate care, fostering therapeutic relationships that support individuals and communities to “effect positive social change” (Walden n.d.).
