Reports indicate that opioid-related drug overdose deaths are now the leading cause of injury- related fatalities in the United States (Opioids.gov, 2019). More Americans are dying from these overdoses than from car accidents. Various factors are contributing to this crisis. This is the topic I have chosen for further investigation. I have researched and selected a peer-reviewed article on this subject and have analyzed it. The findings from this analysis are presented below. Another application is to optimize the use of therapies, such as involving a pain management team. This team educates patients on various pain management techniques, leading to improved outcomes and satisfaction. Educating patients and their families also serves as a professional practice benefit for pain management, as highlighted in this article. Finally, the article suggests that another professional practice use is to decrease the number of symptoms and enhance patients' functional status. Research Analysis Matrix Strengths of the Research The article offers evidence to support pain management. The article offers evidence derived from direct patient access. The article presented data collected directly from patients' medical records and charts. The article employed a diverse team strategy. Limitations of the Research Some references are old, from early 2000’s and 1990’s. Certain pain management methods discussed in the article do not work for every patient. The article could have included more participants. The article might have adopted an alternative research method, like a systematic review of pain and its effective management. Studies show there is an ongoing disconnect between comprehending the pathology of pain and the suggested treatments for it. Relevancy to Topic of Interest The article describes methods for nurses to aid in managing pain for patients and the interdisciplinary team. Understanding additional techniques for pain management enables nurses to practice more effectively. The article illustrates that patients experienced reduced pain, indicating its potential application in nursing practice.
