By practice description, the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGAC NP) is an advanced practice specialty for registered nurses that focuses care to adults and older adults with acute, critical, and complex chronic physical and mental illnesses across the entire adult age spectrum. Meanwhile, Nursing informatics (NI) is the specialty that integrates nursing science with multiple information and analytical sciences to identify, define, manage, and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice. Through definition itself, it could be inferred that there is a wide gap of difference between the two specialties. AGAC NP specialty focuses more on direct patient care and NI on assimilation of scientific data to the nursing practice. By target population, AGAC NP specialty centers on patients who are characterized as “physiologically unstable, technologically dependent, and/or are highly vulnerable to complications” (AACN, 2016). On the other hand, NI concentrates on “concepts of data, information, and knowledge as a framework for understanding clinical information systems and their impact on health care” (ANA, 2015). By scope of practice, AGAC NP specialty have specific duties that are based on core competency areas which are Scientific Foundations, Leadership, Quality, Practice Inquiry, Technology & Information Literacy, Policy, Health Delivery System, Ethics, and Independent Practice (AACN, 2016). As a summary, these duties include (Hamlin, 2022): Examining, diagnosing, and monitoring acutely ill patients, Developing multi-faceted treatment plans and overseeing their implementation, Coordinating healthcare services for acutely ill patients in critical care, Identifying appropriate interventions to improve the well-being of patients with acute illness, Facilitating transfers between different care environments and levels of care, Serving as an advocate for patients and families and supporting decision-making, Conducting research, Teaching and mentoring other healthcare professionals.
