I actually explored this topic too, and it's really intriguing to see how much new research is coming out in this space. One thing that caught my eye recently is the growing theory behind the hygiene hypothesis; how our cleaner, more sanitized environments might be contributing to the rise in allergies. It seems that our immune systems might not be getting the kind of exposure they used to (to bacteria, viruses, etc.), and this could be throwing things off. A 2020 study by Forbes et al. dives into this, suggesting that modern-day factors like antibiotic use and less exposure to certain microbes in early life may be disrupting the immune system and making allergies more common. They even suggest that probiotics might be one way to help balance things out. Also, I’ve been following some of the advancements in treatments for allergies, especially with biologics. Things like omalizumab (a monoclonal antibody) show real promise for people with severe asthma or allergic rhinitis.
