Week 1 Discussion 2 Initial Post InstructionsIf art lacks a clear definition, what criteria are used to determine what a work of art is? Please look at several works on any museum website to discuss what constitutes "art." Some major museums include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Art Institute of Chicago, or National Gallery of Art, or consider finding a local museum. The permanent collection is normally under the Collections link, but feel free to explore the entire website for your selection. For the initial post, address the following: What approaches should we take in responding to a work of art? Select an example of art that fits your definition of art and provide an example of non-art (either from the site or in the world around you). Determine how line, color, texture, and/or composition are part of your definition. What approaches should we take in responding to a work of art? It is difficult to determine what art really is since there are so many types available that make it hard to create a universal definition for every aspect out there. Jacobus and Martin (2019) explain that there are three types of criteria that can be used to determine what is considered a work of art: it is made by an artist, it is intended to be a work of art by the creator, and recognized experts agree that it is a work of art. This identification of art is more conceptual to which it actually has flaws in the criteria. The main flaw is the fact that it does not allow for other outside perspectives other than the artist and so-called experts. That is why Jacobus and Martin (2019) include the perception of art into the criteria as well by describing our perception of what we observe and our conception of what we already know can also identify works of art. Taking all of this together, it is clear to see that the approaches we should take in responding to a work of art correlate with both the conceptual and perceptual identifications of art. One should approach a work of art by viewing all forms of what incorporated make it art in the eyes of the viewer, whether it follows all of these criteria’s or not.
