Week 2 Essay: Painting Analysis & Reflection Student Name Chamberlain University College of Nursing HUMN 303 January 16th Thomas Eakin’s Realism Thomas Eakins was an American realist painter, photographer, sculptor, and an educator for fine arts. He is well known for being one of the most important American Artist. Over his career which was about 40 years, he fabricated more than 500 paintings. One of them being “The Gross Clinic” which is what this essay will be discussing about. Surprisingly this painting was declined when entered to be displayed at the United States Centennial Exhibition, in Philadelphia. Artistic Movement Associated with the Work of Art: This specific piece of artwork related to realism. Realism is one of the first contemporary movements that originated in France and had a major impact on the history of art. Thomas Eakins, had very minimal interest in what was happening in the nineteenth century about romantics along with expression, religion, or feelings. On the other hand, Thomas along with other realists displayed their art in more realistic way dealing with rendered individuals and situations. Style of Artist within the Movement: Eakins paintings are mainly focused on sports and the human body. One of the sports that reflect in his painting is related to boat races that displayed local heroes. Eakins had a lot of self-confidence and was at ease when naked. There are a number of photographs of him at ease of this. Unfortunately, the public lacked the same passion that Eakins had for the naked body. Eakins played a major role on a specific individual in an amphitheater when he performed an operation on an alive patient. As mentioned above Thomas loved the human body and took the next step to enroll into medical school in Philadelphia to perform more operations. Depth of Influences: Eakin’s had many stylistic influences throughout his career. Naturalism was a top passion for Eakin’s, and numerous painters admired Thomas for this. Majority of Thomas artwork displayed reality and that was Eakin’s goal throughout his lifetime. Thomas attended Leon Bonnet’s group which was a French realist painter who had similar idea to Eakin’s.
