Twelfth Night vs. She's the Man Angelia Christine GuruleChamberlain University College of Nursing HUMN-303Anna Farrell February 8th This essay will discuss the similarities and differences between Shakespeare's Twelfth Night and Fickman's She's the Man. In She's the Man and Twelfth Night, most of the characters have the same names and respectfully play similar roles as their counterparts. The main difference is the setting and modernization. The movie Twelfth Night is about a character named Viola, who was separated from her twin brother Sebastian at sea and decides to pose as her brother to work for Duke Orsino. Duke happens to be in love with Countess Olivia and sends Viola to court her for him. During this time, Olivia fell in love with Viola while at the same time, Viola was slowly falling for Duke. Sebastian eventually shows up and marries Olivia in a case of misidentify which causes Viola to be outed as a woman. Viola eventually took off her Sebastian disguise and married Duke in the end. This play was written around 1600 as a romantic comedy (Bevington, 2023). The movie She's the Man is about a character Viola who poses as her twin brother Sebastian and goes to boarding school as him to play soccer due to her inability to play on the women’s soccer team at her school, Cornwall. She meets Duke and it's love at first sight; he is not only the star soccer player at this school but is also her roommate. The dilemma is Duke loves Olivia, but Olivia falls for Viola who is still posing as her brother Sebastian. The problem starts when the real Sebastian comes home early from London and arrives on campus to find that his sister has been posing as him. Duke feels betrayed by Sebastian, aka Viola for kissing Olivia and during a soccer game, refuses to play as a team on the field even after Viola was shown to not be the real Sebastian.
