Though it is an intertwining of words and emotions, poetry has different meanings to different people. “Poetry is the chiseled marble of language. It is a paint-spattered canvas, but the poet uses words instead of paint, and the canvas is you”. (Flanagan, M. 2015). When a poem speaks to you, you find that you can relate to it and feel an openness when reading it. To inspire my art creation this week I chose a poem by Christina Rossetti titled “Sonnets are Full of Love”. INSPIRATION PIECE Sonnets are full of love Sonnets are full of love, and this my tome Has many sonnets: so here now shall be One sonnet more, a love sonnet, from me To her whose heart is my heart’s quiet home, To my first Love, my Mother, on whose knee I learnt love-lore that is not troublesome; Whose service is my special dignity, And she my loadstar while I go and come. And so, because you love me, and because I love you, Mother, I have woven a wreath Of rhymes wherewith to crown your honoured name: In you not fourscore years can dim the flame Of love, whose blessed glow transcends the laws Of time and change and mortal life and death. Our textbook says that, “a poem primarily reveals a limited but deep feeling about some thing or event and is often associated with the feelings of the poet”. (Jacobus & Martin 2016). The emotion resonating from the words in this poem touched my heart. Christina Rossetti, born in 1830 wrote this poem among others to show appreciation to her mother and as a gift on her eightieth birthday. Her father had been sickly, and her mother had taken up the role of taking care of the family. In this poem, Christina reveals the love she has for her mother. The calm tone of this poem also shows the deep relationship she shares with her mother. The line, “To her whose heart is my heart’s quiet home”, relates to the reader the peace and comfort she finds in her mother’s love. She refers to her as her first love and uses capital letter in the word “Mother” to show respect and value. She also tells of how her mother guides her through life. In the last three lines, Christina likens her love for her mother to be like a flame that cannot be dim, going beyond life and extending till death.
