Mary Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker. She was born in Pennsylvania, but spent much of her adult life in Paris, France, where she became closely associated with the Impressionist movement. The Impressionist movement was a radical 19th-century art movement centered in Paris between the 1870s and 1880s that broke from traditional academic painting, emphasizing the changing qualities of light, visible brushstrokes, and subjects of ordinary, modern life (Yarnell School, n.d.). Mary’s art was known for its bold colors and structured compositions, depicting the private and social lives of women, particularly mothers and children (Sachant et al., 2016). The artwork I chose from our lesson was a painting by Mary titled Lady at the Tea Table. The AI generative tool that I had used for this assignment was ChatGPT. I had some difficulty using ChatGPT, as I haven't used it for assignments. I successfully conducted my interview with ChatGPT, which played the role of Mary. ChatGPT produced an interview with answers that were about 80% accurate from my research. Mary’s artistic influences were based on the unique integration of Impressionist techniques, Japanese aesthetic principles, and a focus on modern, gritty portrayals of women’s domestic and social lives (Potter, 2006). When comparing the answers that ChatGPT generated for me for the interview, they were very similar; in fact, it had provided extra information, especially when describing how Japanese prints influenced Mary. It specifically states that her inspiration from Japanese prints came from artists, including Kitagawa Utamaro.
