Document Overview
Alterations in the Cellular Process of Acute Myeloid Leukemia Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) is a type of cancer affecting the blood and bone marrow, characterized by the proliferation of immature myeloid cells. Myeloid cells interfere with the production of normal blood cells, causing the depletion of erythrocytes, leukocytes, and thrombocytes. Tailored treatment strategies are crucial for improving outcomes in individuals diagnosed with AML. This paper aims to analyze and discuss the pathophysiology of AML while connecting this information to the presented case study. Pathophysiology of Acute Myeloid Leukemia The patient's cytogenetic analysis revealed a FLT3-ITD mutation, as shown in the case study. The primary cellular abnormality in AML is the mutation of FLT3-ITD, which causes proteins to activate multiple intracellular signaling pathways, leading to cell proliferation (Kiyoi et al., 2020). These mutations lead to cell overcrowding, depleting normal functioning blood cells. The limited production of functional blood cells results in patients experiencing fatigue, bruising, excessive bleeding, and petechiae, as shown in the case study. In conclusion, mutated cell proliferation leads to abnormal hematopoiesis, resulting in the development of AML. What Role do Genetic Mutations Play in the Development of AML? As previously discussed, AML is caused by mutated cell proliferation that alters hematopoiesis. Once duplicated, the mutated myeloblasts disrupt molecular pathways from maintaining cellular processes, leading to cellular division dysregulation (Makkar et al., 2023). The percentage of myeloblasts in bone marrow is an indication of the development of AML and the degree to which genetic mutation has occurred. Furthermore, the amount of proliferating myeloblasts cause leukocyte depression, compromising the patient's immune system. manage AML by targeting the affected cells. Early detection, personalized care, and patient support are critical in improving survival rates and quality of life.
