2 Case Study Analysis COPD is a progressive and disabling disease of the lungs that causes breathlessness and other lung symptoms (Agarwal et al., 2023). In this paper, a 62-year-old male smoker with progressive dyspnoea is discussed, along with the possible etiology of COPD, its pathophysiology, and its complications. The purpose of this paper is to enhance understanding of COPD and its treatment by responding to the questions posed in this paper with support from evidence-based sources. Causes of COPD COPD is affected by the patient’s history and behavior. The highest risk factor is a 40- pack-year smoking history because smoking results in chronic inflammation and oxidative stress, which leads to airway injury and alveolar destruction (Cha et al., 2023). Occupational Factors Other factors may enhance the likelihood of developing COPD such as occupational hazards such as exposure to dust, chemicals, or fumes in the workplace. These components increase the risk of lung injury by producing constant inflammation and irritation of the respiratory tract (Mishra et al., 2023). Second-hand Smoke and its Effects on the lung Tobacco smoke is known to cause inflammation of the respiratory system damage to the alveoli and the loss of elasticity that results in hyperinflation and a barrel-shaped chest (Cha et al., 2023). Hyperinflation is a condition that can develop in a patient when the lungs are filled with air and the diaphragm cannot perform its function in the best way and this decreases the effectiveness of ventilation. These alterations result in reduced FEV1/FVC ratio as was seen in this patient. 4 bronchodilator medications, and pulmonary rehabilitation reduce the rate of progression of the disease process as well as enhance the quality of life of the COPD patient.
